Runescape Bots: A perspective

Scripts and programs that automate a set of actions or tasks on runescape are often referred to as bots. They help accomplish tasks of great magnitude in a very short span of time. Most of the top players of the game have admitted using some kind of automation at some level of the game. Runescape bots allow you to continue leveling up while you are asleep. It gives you the unfair advantage you need to compete in the game.

Most of these bots are made on browser based scripts like grease monkey. But due to the unreliable nature of various browser, many of the latest bots are based on java or .net platform.  Programs coded on these platforms tend to be much more stable and reliable as compared to their browser based counterparts. Most of these programs run on screen capping algorithms. These algorithms try to identify various objects being displayed on your screen. This is mainly accomplished by identifying various color patterns. More often than not the bot identify various elements to the game without any problem. Usually a executing engine is coded from these non browser based scripting languages and a simple script file is loaded onto the engine for execution. The engine acts like a translator. It translates the simple code language into machine language execution.

Using automation or bots at any level on runescape is greatly frowned upon. One can lose his or her account if they are not careful. Most of the latest bots come with a inbuilt anti ban system. The anti ban system consist of an advanced human mimicking algorithm which ensures the botting activities don’t raise any flags and always fly under the radar. This is accomplished by randomizing every action taken by the bot during the game play. Avoiding systematic patterns of action ensures that no flags are raised.

To summarize, botting is just an aspect of game which one must deal with. It does degrade the whole game play experience a bit but that is just the way it is. People are going to continue to make their life easy and the authorities are going to try their best to prevent it. But because of the scale of operations which jagex has to handle, it becomes really difficult to identify the culprits on one by one basis.
